What makes a kitchen a farmhouse kitchen?

You may wonder, what is a farmhouse kitchen? This kitchen design style features rough aesthetics or rustic characteristics to make it resemble a traditional farmhouse kitchen that you would find in a rural country setting. Are you interested in renovating or constructing a kitchen as a farmhouse-style kitchen?

Here is an overview of the primary attributes of a farmhouse kitchen:

Natural Materials

A farmhouse kitchen is the opposite of a modern kitchen, where you would see vinyl floor tiles or transparent splash backs near the stove. Almost all farmhouse kitchens use natural materials like wood, stone, and brick.

After all, many farmers built their own houses and kitchens in the old days and only had access to the materials their immediate environment produced for them. There were no home improvement stores like Home Depot where materials could be obtained.

Wood is the most essential natural material for creating a farmhouse kitchen. Everything from the cabinetry and tables to the flooring and ceiling beams is made of hardwood materials like oak. Wood makes these features stand out due to their rigid textures and aged finishes.

Farmhouse kitchen countertops can also be made of wood, although the more sophisticated farmers had stone countertops if they could get their hands on the material. They also had brick-based splash backs behind the stove because brick is more resistant to water and debris than wood.

Metal Lighting Fixtures

A farmhouse kitchen typically has metal lighting fixtures of copper or wrought iron. These include lantern chandeliers and pendant-style light fixtures with metal shades. They don’t brighten a kitchen like modern lighting fixtures and shades, but they can establish a vintage fixture design for your farmhouse kitchen.

If you care about brightness, try installing LED bulbs in your vintage lighting fixtures to enjoy the best of both worlds.

 Spaciousness and Openness

Farmhouse kitchens are not small rooms like most home kitchens you see today. They were much more spacious rooms with plenty of openness for multiple people to move around simultaneously. Even with less living space, you can create a sense of openness by installing glass-front or doorless cabinets to store your kitchenware.
